Tarun Kanti Mishra is a distinguished and widely respected figure in contemporary Odia literature. Known for his evocative storytelling and deep understanding of human emotions, he has made a significant contribution to modern Indian literature. Early Literary Journe:
Tarun Kanti Mishra’s literary journey began at a very young age. He started writing and publishing short stories during his school years. His first anthology of short stories was published in 1968 while he was still an undergraduate student. Over the decades, he has written more than 300 short stories, along with twenty-five collections of short stories, three novels, and a novella, establishing himself as one of the most influential storytellers in Odia literature.

Mishra’s writing is admired for its poetic elegance, emotional depth, and stylistic versatility. Tarun Kanti Mishra completed his Master’s degree from Utkal University, India, and the University of East Anglia, England. In recognition of his contributions to literature and society, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) by North Odisha University in 2014.
Career in Public Service:
Apart from his literary achievements, Tarun Kanti Mishra had a distinguished career in public administration. He joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1975 and served in several important administrative positions before retiring as the Chief Secretary of the Government of Odisha. His outstanding contribution to governance earned him the Think Odisha Leadership Award.

Some of the most notable among them include the Sahitya Akademi Award (2019), Odisha Sahitya Academy Award (1997), Sarala Award (2001), Jhankar Award (1997), Katha Award (New Delhi), Kadambini Samman, Prananath Samman, Brajanatha Ratha Saraswat Samman, and Satyabadi Saraswat Samman (2025), among many others.
